sexual orientation and depression in adolescents
Keywords:
Sexual orientation, Depression, AdolescenceAbstract
The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between sexual orientation and depression in adolescents. The sample was made up of 683 adolescents between 13 and 18 years old (M = 15.97; SD = 1.44). 536 were women (mean age = 15.91, SD = 1.42) and 147 were men (mean age = 16.20, SD = 1.49). Questions were asked about their sexual orientation, feelings, fantasies and experiences. The results indicated that 37.48% of the adolescents identified themselves as heterosexual, 32.21% mostly heterosexual, 22.69% bisexual, 3.95% mostly homosexual, 1.76% homosexual, and 1.90% other sexual orientations. Gay adolescents are more likely to be depressed than those who do not perceive themselves that way. No significant differences in depression scores were observed among those who are unsure about their sexual orientation. Those adolescents who attend public schools presented lower values of depression than those who attend private schools.
