In response to the educational needs presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, higher education institutions implemented distance education, adopting online learning as a teaching modality. This sudden change brought with it a range of problems for students and teachers, such as socio-emotional conditions, inequalities and irregularities in the teaching-learning process. The main objective of this study was to investigate the perception of distance education and various socio-emotional aspects that these changes caused in a sample composed of 492 participants, 198 teachers and 294 students of different genders and age ranges, who underwent the change of modality (face-to-face education to virtual education) in higher education institutions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The different points of view of each group are discussed regarding the change of modality implemented.
