Empathy is a fundamental competence in patient care that has benefits both for the patient and for the nurses themselves. The present study aims to study the empathy levels of a sample of 414 Spanish nurses as well as their relationship with sociodemographic variables using the (JSE) for nursing students. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and t tests, ANOVAS and correlations, using SPSS version 22. The results suggest that the empathy levels of the study sample are considered high and there are statistically significant relationships with the emotional attention dimension and the degree of studies. Finally, we establish statistically significant correlations with all dimensions of the instrument (JSE) for nursing students and the age of the participants.
